A Maryborough woman has been identified by police as the person who died after her car crashed into a tree and burst into flames near Newstead earlier this week.
The incident occurred on the Muckleford-Yapeen Road at Muckleford South on Monday when it is believed the car left the road, hit a tree and caught fire at around 1.20 pm.
Castlemaine Police Leading Senior Constable Wayne Cairnes said police believe the accident was caused by a medical issue.
“An approximately 68-year-old woman was travelling through the Muckleford area when her vehicle left the road, collided with a tree and exploded into flames,” he said.
“We believe the cause of the incident may have been due to a medical issue. The investigation is still ongoing at this stage.”
Led Sen Con Cairnes said the incident was attended by CFA and SES crews along with police from Maryborough, Castlemaine and Bendigo.
“The car was still alight when emergency services arrived and fire fighters worked to extinguish the blaze,” he said.
“A crime scene was set up immediately and the road was closed for around two to three hours.
