Maryborough suffers tough loss to Kyneton

Kya Lanfranchi earns a free kick as he tries to get the ball down the ground during Maryboroughʼs battle with Kyneton on Saturday.

After leading by one point at three quarter time, Maryborough was completely out run by Kyneton in the final term of Saturday’s match.

The Magpies had tickets on themselves against the Tigers, having defeated the side by 38 points in round seven, but Kyneton refused to back down and put on a stunning five-goal display in the final term to run out as 28-point winners.

Kyneton started the match with gusto, but inaccuracy allowed the Pies to lurk not too far behind despite several fewer shots at goal.

The Tigers kicked 3.6 (24) in the first to Maryborough’s 2.2 (14) allowing the home side a 10-point lead by quarter time.

Playing catch up in the second, the Pies slotted three majors, but the Tigers were persistent, adding three of their own goals to lead by 11 points at half time.

The break was much needed for both sides who came out firing in a thrilling third quarter battle.

Maryborough very quickly turned its prospects around, almost doubling its score in the one term, kicking 4.3 (27) to Kyneton’s shaky 2.3 (15).
