The announcement of Maryborough’s Westpac Bank branch closure has left community members stunned and angry, with only two month’s notice given before the branch shuts its doors on September 6.
The closure means Maryborough will no longer be home to a Westpac branch or ATM.
There has been an outpouring of concern from the community, including Member for Ripon Louise Staley who labelled the closure as “outrageous”.
Residents have also shown their frustration with a number of protest signs now adorning the branches windows.
One local business which will feel the impact of the closure is Maryborough Ballarat Real Estate.
Sales consultant Luke Williams said the closure is a blow for the town.
“It’s very inconvenient for locals and it’s a blow to the town,” he said.
“All of our clients bank with Westpac, whether it’s paying rent or bonds, it all goes via the Westpac branch, so unfortunately we have to re-jig all our procedures to ensure we can still allow people to have access to those services.
“If someone banks with Westpac and needs to get a bond cheque prepared, they will no longer be able to go in-branch, they’ll have to look at other options or potentially pay a fee to another bank.”
