Maryborough’s improvement throughout the season was put on display at the weekend, with the Pies challenging top five side Sandhurst in a tough skirmish.
Maryborough fans would’ve headed into the weekend tentatively as even though Maryborough sits just below the Dragons on the ladder, the last time the pair met in round four the Pies went down by 45 points.
The Magpies have been determined to change their image this season and did just that with a competitive showing at Princes Park on Saturday.
Maryborough led at the first break, putting up 3.6 (24) while Sandhurst faltered in front of goals, putting up just 1.4 (10).
This 14-point lead was short-lived however, with the Dragons making up the difference by slotting through 4.4 in the second term to Maryborough’s 1.2.
The Pies sat uncomfortably close at the main break with just seven points the difference between them and their competitors.
This weighed heavily on the visitors who really turned it on in the third, slotting five majors to Maryborough’s two throughout the quarter to take their most comfortable lead yet into the final break.
