Students shine at Eisteddfod event to bring home gold

Maryborough Education Centreʼs concert band are celebrating success at the Bendigo Competitions Societyʼs 2019 Eisteddfod event.

Maryborough Education Centre’s (MEC) concert band were hitting all the right notes this month at the Bendigo Competitions Society’s 94th annual Eisteddfod event.

The band of 16 students competed at intermediate level in the 2019 Secondary Colleges Instrumental Competition against six other bands, performing three songs of their choice at Bendigo South East College on June 7.

The students took home top honours receiving a Gold Standard for their performance, and MEC music teacher and band conductor Jenny Wagstaff said it was great to see the students bring home the gold.

“I would’ve been happy with a silver or bronze but it was great to get a gold,” she said.

“Instead of doing placings from first to last, the adjudicator awards gold, silver or bronze standard, depending on how each band performed. We were fortunate enough to get one of the golds, there were only two or three handed out, and most of the bands were from the Bendigo area. It’s been encouraging for everyone.

“It’s an annual event and it’s just a nice thing to do through the school system.”

To make the competition even more special, it was the first Eisteddfod for seven of the band’s members.
