Carisbrook Primary School’s Mitch Pickering and Harvey Rumpff are off to regional cross country today, in the race to beat some of the best runners from around the state.
Mitch, 10 and Harvey, nine have already made it through two levels of competitive running, surpassing the local competition and qualifying in Bendigo last month.
The Bendigo qualifier saw thousands of schools converge at the Bendigo Jockey Club for the 2019 Goldfields/ Sandhurst Division Cross Country.
Mitch and Harvey raced against students from their own age group and had to place in the top 10 to qualify for today’s regionals in St Arnaud.
Placing eighth in the three kilometre stretch, grade five student Mitch said the Bendigo competition was “chaotic”.
“We had to make it through to Maryborough and then we had to go to Bendigo,” he said.
“Bendigo was chaotic, there were so many people at the start line.
“I was super tired at the end.”
Despite finishing second last year, this will be the first regional appearance for Harvey as he is now old enough to head to the next level.
