Pies face tough battle in Golden Square clash

Lachlan Crameri wins a boundary throw in during the Magpies’ round three clash with Eaglehawk.

Maryborough is gearing up for another tough clash this weekend when it meets Golden Square in round five of the Bendigo Football Netball League’s 2019 season.

The Pies have had a very mixed few rounds of football, with one win, two close losses and one shameful defeat, leaving the side’s performance this weekend anyone’s guess.

The Bulldogs have dropped just one game so far this season, claiming wins over Kyneton, Kangaroo Flat and most recently South Bendigo at the weekend.

The Dogs led the match early on Saturday and despite a fight back from the Bloods in the second quarter, they sealed a relatively easy 61-point win in the end.

This is worrying for Maryborough who went down to South Bendigo 14.13 (97) to 9.11 (65) just a few weeks beforehand in round one.

Since then, the Pies have claimed a win over Castlemaine and came bizarrely close to reigning premiers Eaglehawk in round three.

The biggest concern for Maryborough will be avoiding a repeat of last weekend’s effort.
