The Porteous Road, Wareek bridge is set to receive a $1 million upgrade thanks to state and federal government support, as well as a contribution from the Central Goldfields Shire Council.
The contract for the replacement was awarded to Murray Constructions Pty Ltd at last month’s ordinary council meeting following a full tender evaluation.
Four tenders were submitted for the contract.
The $1 million replacement is thanks to a $500,000 Federal Government grant, $270,000 from the State Government and a $230,000 contribution from the council.
Central Goldfields Shire general manager infrastructure assets and planning Rebecca Stockfeld said the bridge has a load limit enforced which restricts the types of vehicles that can use the bridge.
“It is also not up to our infrastructure standards, which states that pretty much any vehicle should be able to use our bridges,” she said.
“It’s been on our list for a long time as a bridge to replace and we’ve been very successful in getting both state and federal government funding to replace it.”
