Maryborough’s Alex Tolson claims bronze at State Athletics Championships

Alex Tolson has walked over the competition at the Victorian State Athletics Championships, bringing home Maryborough Little Athletics Centreʼs first medal in six years.

Alex Tolson can walk with his head held high after breaking a six-year medal drought for his local Little Athletics club, claiming a bronze in race walking at the State Athletics Championships earlier this month.

Year eight student, Tolson, claimed the bronze and a new personal best with a time of 8:50.76 in the under 14 boys’ 1500 metre walk.

The medal-winning feat was the first state medal for the Maryborough Little Athletics Centre since 2013.

Tolson said he is “very proud” of his efforts, not only to be crowned third best in the whole state, but to have wiped more than 20 seconds off his previous personal best for the same event.

“It has been a long time for Maryborough since we’ve won a medal, we won our last one in 2013 so it felt pretty good,” he said.

“I also set a personal best as well so I’m very proud of myself.

“I thought it was going to be a lot closer between me and fourth place, but he got a bit tired in the end. Second place beat me by a little bit, but it was good motivation to try and keep up.”
