The Maryborough Harness Racing Club’s first highlight meet of 2019 went off without a hitch on Friday and although crowd numbers were down, the Maryborough Gold Cup was won in record-breaking fashion.
Five-year-old New Zealand product Buster Brady claimed the $19,950 grand prize and the cup title in a dominant performance on Friday night, setting a track record with a winning mile rate of 1.55.4.
Trained and driven by Swedish-born Kima Frenning, Buster Brady’s most recent triumph leaves him with six wins from his last seven starts this season.
Lookofalegend was the cup runner-up and Flaming Flutter placed third.
Maryborough Harness Racing Club secretary Les Chapman said the decision to move the date of the cup, which is usually held in conjunction with the trotters cup, to a Friday may have impacted crowd numbers.
“The crowd was a little disappointing on the day. The club’s plan to move to a new date as far as attendance goes wasn’t a success, but our turnover figures are expected to be up,” he said.
