Tartan and Dunolly Blue to meet in semi-final clash

Gary Firman of Talbot Gold bowls for the side during its final home and away game of the season against Golf Blue.

The Goldfields Bowls Division’s 2018-19 finalists have been decided as the last home and away round of Saturday pennant was played at the weekend.

Division one saw Newstead grab its second win of the season, with a triumphant 91-60 victory over Avoca Red.

Newstead’s drought breaking win came from all three rinks, with David Cobden too strong for George Brown, beating him 32-19, Robert Jackson defeating Noel Parratt by three shots and Bill Burnett (36) overcoming Ian Proctor (21).

Despite the win, Newstead has still finished the season in last place on the ladder with just two wins to its name.

While Avoca Red also claimed just two wins throughout the season, small rink wins gave the side enough premiership points to finish in fifth.

Finishing in fourth and now advancing into semi finals is Golf Blue, a side who suffered a 14-shot loss to third placed Talbot Gold at the weekend.

Blue conceded all rinks on Saturday, with Talbot’s Peter McLoughlin, Robert Jackson and Peter Fletcher leading the side to its 69-55 victory.

In a cruel twist, Talbot and Golf will again verse each other this Saturday to determine who will advance through finals.

Talbot’s track record is much better with a 10-5 win-loss ratio, including three wins over Golf Blue already this season.

Golf has won just over half of its games for the season, but a semi- final win this Saturday will be a tough feat considering its past with Talbot.

Also heading into semi finals after facing each other at the weekend are Highland Tartan and Dunolly Blue.
