In a shock result, the Creswick Imperials have claimed a relatively easy five-wicket win over Maryborough on Saturday.
The Owls posted a respectable score of 8/214 the weekend before and many would’ve doubted the Knights’ ability to overcome that score especially considering their recent history.
Before Saturday, Creswick had just three wins under its belt and they were only over A grade’s two
bottom of the ladder sides, MKM and Laanecoorie Dunolly.
To win with a reply of 5/218 at the weekend was a massive feat for the Imperials who have had a rocky 2018-19 season.
The Knights sent Joel Antonio and Josh Mitchell to open on Saturday, but Mitchell was bowled quickly for a duck by Sam Bartlett.
Former Creswick captain Kane Leathem was next in the order and was able to come to a 35-run partnership beside Antonio (23), before he too was claimed by Bartlett.
Leathem and current skipper Lachlan Pryor pushed the side’s
score to 50 runs before Leathem (24), like the two before him, was also claimed by Bartlett.
Leathem had stepped away from the side and the captaincy at the start of the season, leaving the Knights without one of their best runscorers from season 2017-18, but Saturday’s promising appearance was Leathem’s third for the year.
Matt Antonio (10) replaced Leathem alongside Pryor, but was claimed LBW off the hand of Martin Dell.
