Community groups share in Serpent grants

President of Avoca Friends of the Pool, Jo Field (third from left), alongside junior committee members AJ Robinson, Storm Black and Jasmine Field are all smiles after receiving a community grant from the Rainbow Serpent Festival.

Renowned for being one of the largest festivals in Victoria, the Rainbow Serpent Festival has given back to the community, with grants given to local community groups.

A total of 15 community groups in Ballarat and the Pyrenees Shire shared in the grants, which range from $500 to $2500, and aim to assist projects in facilitating connected, creative and healthy local communities.

Included in these projects are Avoca’s own More Picnics by the Pool and the Moonambel Events Inc.

Secretary of Avoca Friends of the Pool, Joan Quinlan, said their $500 grant comes at a great time for the community group.

“Our project this year is to raise enough money to put some picnic tables up at the pool (Avoca) and an inbuilt community barbecue. At the moment, Friends of the Pool will run community barbecues but just with a little portable unit, so the idea is to create an area where people can cook a barbecue, have some lunch and use the pool facilities, which are lovely,” she said.

“It’s a reasonable project which will take a little while, but the grant will certainly go towards that.
