Ace experience for Maryborough hot shots

Lucky Maryborough Tennis Club members were treated to a special day at the Australian Open last week where they got to meet (centre) Paralympian Dylan Alcott.

Maryborough Tennis Club members got a one-of-a-kind Australian Open experience many tennis enthusiasts dream of last Thursday.

The club is part of the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Community Play program, which sees volunteers run sessions around Australia to make tennis more accessible for children living in regional areas.

Each year one of the community play clubs is invited to attend the Australian Open, and 2019 was the Maryborough Tennis Club’s lucky year.

The trip included free ground passes and travel costs and club members got the chance to meet ANZ tennis ambassador, Grand Slam Para champion and Paralympic gold medallist Dylan Alcott, when they arrived at Melbourne Park last week.

The day was attended by 50 parents and children from Mary- borough and Maryborough Tennis Club president Heather Carr said it was a great day.

“For most of the children and their parents it was their first time at the Australian Open and a chance to see some of the top tennis players playing and practicing,” she said.
