Local bowlers take out Wannon sports awards

Evelyn Wiseman (middle) and Kira Bourke (absent) were two Maryborough representatives to receive an award from Member for Wannon Dan Tehan (right) for their contribution to lawn bowls.

Maryborough was represented by two local bowlers at the 2018 Wannon electorate selection of the National Volunteer and Australian Government Sports awards last month.

Highview’s Kira Bourke and Maryborough Carpet Bowls treasurer Evelyn Wiseman represented the Central Goldfields Shire and both collected awards for their dedication to the sport.

Year 10 student, Kira was one of 11 girls from the Wannon electorate to be presented with an individual sport award in the under 18 category.

She was nominated for her dedication and success in the sport of lawn bowls, having recently claimed her second national singles title.

Kira travels all the way from Maryborough to Ocean Grove for intensive training and play.

In the community contribution by an individual category, Evelyn was celebrated for over 50 years of play and 30 years as treasurer at the local carpet bowls club.

Evelyn first tried her hand at bowling as a young lady when her mother’s carpet bowls team needed a fill in.

“They asked me ‘will you come up and play with us?’ so I said I would and when I was going up to the RSL hall I thought ‘what have I done? Look at all these grey headed ladies’, but now I’m one of the grey headed ladies,” she said.
