Gail’s The Greatcoat has success at poetry award

Maryborough resident Gail Oliver was awarded first prize and an encouragement award for her poem The Greatcoat.

Local literature lover Gail Oliver received first prize and an encouragement award for her poem The Greatcoat and is thrilled with her result.

The daughter, wife, sister and mother of ex-servicemen and women, Gail’s poem The Greatcoat was well received at the Story Writing and Art Competition (SWAC) night which was held last month.

“The poem is inspired by memories of my father’s greatcoat hanging on the laundry door. The child in the poem is actually myself, because these are my childhood memories,” Gail said.

“I was thrilled with being awarded first prize and I am really happy with the poem that I submitted. Not all poetry that I write is for sharing, some of it is just for me, but I felt that I had to share The Greatcoat.”

Gail’s love for poetry was sparked when she was studying literature at Ballarat University, now Federation University, during the 1980s.
