Milder weather in Central Victoria has paved the way for fire crews to conduct five planned burns this week.
The burns were scheduled to begin yesterday in Maryborough and will continue at different sites today and Saturday.
Forest Fire Management Victoria Murray Goldfields District manager, Paul Bates, said depending on the weather, the spring planned burning program would begin with burns near Inglewood, Maryborough, Rushworth, Heathcote and Bendigo over the next couple of weeks.
Yesterday’s scheduled burn was set to take place at Mosquito Track, 4.5 km south east of Maryborough. The planned size of the burn was 24 hectares.
A 132 hectare burn is planned for Station Lane, 9.7 km south west of Maryborough for today.
On Saturday, a 20 hectare burn on Derby Road, 2.5 km south west of Maryborough is planned to take place.
“The aim of conducting the burns is to reduce the overall fuel hazard within the burn area and in turn, provide added protection from bushfire to neighbouring communities,” Mr Bates said.
People experiencing symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure should seek medical advice or call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24.
