Bealiba bowls celebrates 50 years

Life members Shirley Coburn and Sam Whitehead cut the Bealiba Indoor Bowls Clubʼs 50th birthday cake last weekend.

The Bealiba Indoor Bowls Club has celebrated its 50th birthday with a night of bowls and a birthday party.

Secretary Pam Brightwell said the club boasts almost 20 members, some of which have been there since the club’s inception in 1968.

“For a sporting club in such a small town, 50 years certainly is a big achievement,” Ms Brightwell said.

“One of the founding members, Sam Whitehead, is still with us. He’s over 90 years old and he still plays every week.”

Mr Whitehead is now a life member at the club and was at the club’s very first meeting.

The club celebrated its half- century milestone with a night of bowls with the Avoca and St Arnaud indoor bowls clubs last month.

“The Avoca and St Arnaud clubs have also been involved for 50 years, we meet once or twice a year to play,” Ms Brightwell said.

“There were about 40 people that came to celebrate our birthday. It was a really good turn out.”
