Since major works to realign the Tullaroop Road and Chaplins Road intersection have been completed, part of Chaplins Road will now be renamed, while a section of Argyle Road will also be renamed after more than six years of work.
Central Goldfields Shire administrators, at last month’s ordinary council meeting, moved two motions to apply to the Office of Geographical Names to name the section of Argyle Road between Gillies Street and Talisman Track as Layton Road and the section of road currently known as Chaplins Road between Tullaroop Road and Carisbrook-Eddington Road as Bucknall Street.
According to council, following the shire’s recent redevelopment works at the Chaplins Road and Tullaroop Road intersection, a road name change is now required. The section of road between the Pyrenees Highway and Tullaroop road will remain as Chaplins Road.
In April this year letters were sent to affected landholders. The closing date for responses to the correspondence was May 18, 2018 but no written submissions were received
At Argyle Road, the name change will be in honour of Maryborough World War I veteran Private Peter Layton who enlisted on January 27, 1915 and served in the 21st Battalion. He returned to Australia on January 25, 1919 with the 4th Field Company Engineers.
In moving the motion to rename the section of Argyle Road, administrator Hugh Delahunty said the project to rename the road started back in 2012.
