Strachan’s 10 sees Sandhurst beat Pies

It was a tough day at the Queen Elizabeth Oval for Maryborough coach Ben Lavars on Saturday.
Not only did the playing coach cop this heavy hit in a marking contest, but his Maryborough Magpies side also went down to Sandhurst to the tune of 107 points, with a former MCDFNL star doing most of the damage.

Maryborough has suffered its third three-figure defeat of the 2018 Bendigo Football Netball League season, succumbing to Sandhurst by 107 points on Saturday.

The Magpies were competitive in patches and worked hard at the Queen Elizabeth Oval, but were unable to contain the likes of key talls Tim Martin and Taylor Strachan in the 24.16 (160) to 7.11 (53) loss.

Strachan, the 2017 Natte Bealiba FNC best and fairest and runner-up in the Lyal Eales Footballer of the Year award, was unrivalled on the ground on Saturday, booting 10 goals while playing deep in the forward line between brief stints in the ruck.

The game was well and truely over by halftime for Maryborough, with the Magpies held to just one goal in the first half. Brady Neill managed that major midway through the second term, but the Dragons, who led 4.2 (26) to 0.3 (3) at quarter time, already had six majors on the board.

They added four more before the halftime siren and led at that stage by 58 points.
