Maryborough Rovers have emerged as a Maryborough Castlemaine District League top four chance after defeating Lexton by 23 points on Saturday.
The 11.19 (85) to 9.8 (62) result at Princes Park was orchestrated by Jon Murphy, who booted six goals to lead Rovers further up the ladder, with the Pies now sitting in fifth and just one win outside the top four at the Queen’s Birthday break.
The bulk of Saturday’s winning margin was carved out in the first quarter with Rovers skipping out to a 3.6 (24) to 1.3 (9) lead.
The Pies continued to pepper the goals in the second quarter, but ultimately couldn’t capitalise on the opportunity’s being driven out of the midfield through the work of the likes of Brad Fraser in the ruck and Bryce Fletcher and Montgomery Reeves at his feet.
