Pies play promising half against top side

Luke Bucknall takes a mark for Maryborough.

Maryborough has far from disgraced itself against the Bendigo Football Netball League’s ladder leaders Eaglehawk, with a second half rally limiting the defeat to 52 points.

Many BFNL observers predicted Saturday’s contest at Barkers Oval, Princes Park would be a majorly one-sided contest with Eaglehawk arriving on top of the ladder to take on the last-placed Magpies.

At halftime those predictions appeared to be coming into fruition with Eaglehawk leading 9.12 (66) to 1.2 (8) after booting four goals to one in the first quarter and five goals to a single behind in the second.

However, the Magpies gained ascendency in the second half, winning the third term and levelling the fourth.

It was the third quarter that was most pleasing for Maryborough, a side that has penchant for fading away in the often decisive period.

Maryborough kicked four goals and three behinds to Eaglehawk’s three goals, three behinds in the third quarter. To put that into some perspective, Eaglehawk has lost just one quarter in its past four matches since losing to Kyneton in round five.
