Storm and Sharp too strong again for Pies

Jayden Templeton celebrates one of his three goals against the Storm at Princes Park.

Victory has continued to evade Maryborough, with the side suffering its fifth consecutive defeat for the 2018 Bendigo Football Netball League season on Saturday.

The Magpies were in for a tough game as they took on reigning premiers Strathfieldsaye, who have suffered just one loss for 2018 and sit in third on the ladder on percentage alone.

Maryborough was missing co-captain Coby Perry as they tackled the Storm at the Pies’ home ground, and failed to put a score on the board in the first term.

Strathfieldsaye took full advantage of the Magpies’ slow start, kicking five majors for a 5.5 (35) to 0.0 (0) lead at the first quarter break.

Things picked up for Maryborough in the second quarter as the home side managed to put three goals on the board, as the defensive end began to slowly take shape with the likes of Luke Bucknall and Bodie Malone managing to keep somewhat of a lid on the Storm’s scoring.

The Magpies limited Strathfieldsaye to four majors in the second term, seeing in halftime with the scoreboard at 9.8 (62) to 3.3 (21).

Despite Maryborough’s best efforts, the Storm continued to dominate the scoreboard throughout the third quarter, booting another eight goals and limiting the Magpies to just one major.

After seeing out the third term with Strathfieldsaye still in the lead 17.14 (116) to 4.3 (27), the final quarter was the biggest scoring quarter for the Magpies as they managed another four goals and two behinds.

However, there was nothing Maryborough could do to halt the Storm as the side booted another seven majors.
