Pies better, but beaten by Bloods

Miles Miranda speeds off with the ball during Maryboroughʼs match with South Bendigo on Saturday.

Maryborough has fallen short of victory despite putting in its most competitive performance of the 2018 Bendigo Football Netball League season on Saturday, going down to South Bendigo by 43 points.

Bolstered by the return of captain Coby Perry, who played his first game of the season, playing coach Ben Lavars and Jacob Long, the Magpies trailed by just 15 points at halftime, but South Bendigo proved to be the fitter team over the journey, running away with a 15.15 (105) to 9.8 (62) win.

Returning to Barkers Oval, Princes Park in near-perfect weather conditions, Maryborough got the jump on the Bloods with the first two goals of the contest through Mitchell Kennedy and Jayden Templeton.

South responded with six first quarter goals of their own but Maryborough managed another major to trail by 22 points at the first break.

The Pies challenged further in the second quarter, their best stanza of the game, kicking three goals to South’s two.
