Manhunt underway after death of a woman in Maryborough

A manhunt is underway in Maryborough this morning following the death of a woman overnight.

The incident took place in Alma Street early this morning, with emergency services attending the address at 3.45 am where a woman was located with serious injuries.

According to a statement from Victoria Police, she was treated by paramedics at the scene but died shortly after.

The woman is yet to be formally identified, although 9news.com.au has reported the victim is aged in her 40s. Nine News has also reported the woman was stabbed.

A male offender, believed to be known to the woman, fled the scene before police arrived.

Homicide Squad detectives are en route.

No arrests have been made at this stage and the investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE – 10.30 am

The homicide squad, a police forensic team and SES crews are now on the scene. The crime scene, along Brougham Street, between Alma and Napier streets, remains cordoned off.

SES crews have also started a line search of the street.

According to neighbours speaking to media at the scene, the female victim was a grandmother.

The Maryborough District Advertiser has also been told of the unsuccessful attempts made by neighbours and paramedics to revive the woman.

UPDATE – 11.30 am

Police have now blocked off Alma Street and emergency services have began searching storm water drains and yards neighbouring the property.

Neighbours have said the female victim “will be missed by the entire community.”

The police dog squad has also been used in the search.

Update 11.50 am

A 39-year-old Maryborough man has been arrested over the death of a local grandmother this morning.

There are reports that the suspect will be taken to hospital for treatment to self-inflicted injuries before being interviewed by police.

The arrest took place after emergency services searched a storm water drain at the rear of the property.

UPDATE 12.15 PM

Police have now confirmed the arrest of a 39-year-old male following the death of a woman in Maryborough this morning.

They have also confirmed the victim is a 52-year-old Maryborough woman.

The man was arrested nearby the crime scene just before midday and has been taken to hospital for treatment.

A statement from Victoria Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
