Talbot ruin Rovers’ season launch in grinding win

Ryan Aquilina clears the ball at top pace for Talbot during the sideʼs Friday night clash with Maryborough Rovers.

Talbot has spoiled Maryborough Rovers’ season launch under lights at Princes Park, running out 44-point winners on Friday night to make a promising start to the 2018 MCDFNL season.

The night time season-launching hit-out was played in the weekend’s most favourable weather conditions and it was Talbot that made the most of the idyllic setting, convincingly besting a wasteful Rovers despite managing just five more scoring shots in an 11.7 (73) to 3.11 (29) victory.

The differing fortunes in front of goals was most evident in a toughly- contested first quarter with the Magpies not making the most of their opportunities in front of goal, kicking just one major from five shots, while Talbot booted three goals, one behind to lead by nine points at quarter time.

Through two goals to one in the second quarter, Talbot grew its lead to 16 points at halftime and continued to grind away in the third.
