Maryborough’s preseason revitalisation of its playing list has failed to bridge the gap between itself and Golden Square, with the Bulldogs running out to an 118-point victory on Saturday.
The Magpies were ultimately disappointing in their first away game of the 2018 Bendigo Football Netball League season, but found some competitive spirit in the second half, stopping the game from being a complete blow-out in a 23.22 (160) to 6.6 (42) defeat.
While a one quarter lapse cost Maryborough in round one against Castlemaine, it was a slow start that proved the Magpies’ worst enemy at My Jet Oval on Saturday.
Golden Square got on top early with a 4.5 (29) to 1.2 (8) first term and then let loose in the second quarter, ramming home nine goals while Maryborough went score- less.
In a more pleasing second half, Maryborough managed three goals in the third quarter and two in the final term. Golden Square, meanwhile, coasted to the final siren and amassed 23 shots at goal in the second half for 10 goals.
