MDCA A grade enters penultimate round

Maryboroughʼs Liam Hepworth prepares to send a cracking bowl down the pitch when the Owls took down ladder leader Creswick Imperials at the weekend.

The penultimate round of the Maryborough District Cricket Association’s A grade 2017-18 season will kick off this weekend as cricketers take to the field for the first innings of round 13.

A MKM Cricket Club and Clunes clash is set to be the most evenly- matched game of the round, after both sides dominated their opponents during round 12 to take outright wins.

The competitive sides have not met since round two when the Magpie’s scored a 50-run victory over the Mill.

Sitting in fifth place and nine points behind fourth, MKM have missed out on making any finals this season, and will now be looking to end the year with a win.

With Clunes only suffering three losses to the Mill’s six, the side is in top form, remaining unbeaten since round nine in December.

Only two points behind Laanecoorie Dunolly, the Magpies have the chance to shake up the ladder and score second place if Laane’s round 13 match against Carisbrook does not go to plan.

After its confidence was knocked when it lost its ladder leading position in round 11, Laane will be looking to pull back into the lead as it meets with the Brookers tomorrow.

With Creswick Imperials facing a bye this round, Laane may take back its top spot, with only three points separating the two sides.

Taking out the one-day grand final in December, Laane will now be looking to rule the 2017-18 season with a two-day grand final victory, much like Maryborough did last season.
