Freight trains will soon return to the Maryborough to Ararat railway line with upgrades on track to be finished this month.
As part of the Murray Basin Rail Project’s stage two upgrades, which involves upgrading 1055 kilometres of railway line from Yelta to Geringhap near Geelong, boom gates and warning lights will be installed to 35 level crossings between Maryborough and Ararat to increase rail safety for drivers.
Ahead of the line reopening, which has not had trains operating on it for more than 15 years, V/Line is urging drivers to be aware of freight trains.
Drivers are advised to:
• Always be careful around lines and trains
• Obey the warning signs and/or barriers and warning lights at level crossings
• Drive at a reduced speed on approaching any work activity while V/Line finishes upgrade works
“We ask everyone to please be vigilant and keep safe around trains, tracks and work sites as we work to return freight trains to the Mildura line,” a V/Line spokesperson said.
