Both Blazers sides make finals despite eventful season’s end

The Maryborough Blazers men’s and women’s sides have scored themselves a spot in the first round of the Country Basketball League finals, despite a rocky finish to the 2017-18 season.

Saturday’s scheduled round 13 match against the Castlemaine Cannons was abandoned after a large grass fire at Creswick- Newstead Road in Smeaton

prevented the Maryborough teams from travelling to the away game.

With a double line-up of matches set for the weekend, the Blazers still saw play go ahead on Sunday, with the Lady Blazers suffering a disappointing defeat to the Bendigo Braves 74-58.

Bendigo made the first score but the Blazers leapt into action, with Maddie Egan scoring a two-pointer in the opening minutes of the match.

Halfway into the first quarter, the Blazers briefly out-scored the Braves with a two-pointer by Tori Chandler setting the score at 7-8.

However, the small victory did not last as Bendigo quickly responded with a score to bring the tally to 9-8.
