Expecting to open in time for the blockbuster release of the latest Star Wars movie in December, Paramount Theatre’s redevelopment is well underway, with more than 15 jobs and up to four cinemas expected to be created at the iconic site.
Hopeful that the newly refurbished cinema one, which will seat around 200 people and feature an 8.5 metre screen, will be open by December 14, new owners of Maryborough’s Paramount Theatre, Helen and Gerard White are busy bringing the 1926 building into the modern era, giving the theatre a much-needed technological upgrade.
“We’re hoping to open cinema one first and then about a month to six weeks later, we will open cinema two, which will seat around 120-130 people,” Mrs White said.
“Cinema two currently seats around 60 to 70 people, we are completely upgrading and extending that one. Later on, we are hoping to open another cinema and a gold class for arthouse films, birthday parties and functions.
“During the school holidays we will be open seven days a week and at all other times we will trial five days a week, Thursday to Monday. If there is a need, we will certainly look at staying open seven days a week all the time.”
A source of social entertainment, Mrs White said cinemas still have their place within a town and said she and her husband are excited to unveil the completed project to locals.
“We’re hoping that people will be excited to come back to the theatre and see what we’ve done. This has been a massive overhaul project,” she said.
