Creswick Imperials have taken the first steps on the long road to making up for last season’s grand final loss, extracting some revenge on reigning premiers Maryborough with a five-wicket win on Saturday in round one of the Maryborough District Cricket Association’s 2017-18 season.
The Knights were challenged by the Owls in stages of both innings but ultimately controlled the flow of the day’s play, keeping Maryborough to 8/123 after sending in the visitors to bat first on the Invermay wicket.
Creswick needed 34 overs of play to chase down the total with an unbeaten half century from re-appointed skipper Kane Leathem getting the job done.
For Maryborough, the struggles came via a lack of contributors with the bat as just two of the nine players to take to the crease were able to make their way to double- figure scores.
The pair were new captain of the Owls and opener Ben Hoban and veteran Martin Dell, who both combined for the bulk of Mary- borough’s total in a 74-run third wicket stand.
The partnership was preceded by the failures of Adam Bell and Mitch McClure, both removed for six, that left Maryborough at 2/25 and was then followed by a 6/24 collapse as the Owls pursued quick runs
