Clunes has posted a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Colts Phelans to sit on top of the MDCA’s A grade ladder at the conclusion of the opening round of the 2017-18 season.
The Magpies were impressive and dominant with ball and bat in hand, bowling through Colts for 133 runs before chasing down the total inside of 32 overs on the back of half centuries to Mark Allen and Brenton Jones.
While it was familiar names that stood out with the bat, Saturday’s victory was evidence that Clunes has made positive moves in terms of recruitment over the off season with a number of fresh faces playing key roles in the victory.
Former Mt Clear representative Sam Williams led with the ball in hand, claiming 3/7 from a majorly restrictive seven overs while Troy Thomson also had an impact in his return to the MDCA after a season’s break, claiming 3/20.
Shane and Dylan Davies, both formerly of the Coronet Cricket Club, also impressed with three wickets between them.
As impressive as the effort was with the ball, Clunes openers Brenton Jones and Mark Allen were the stand-out performers of the day, ending any chance of a close contest with a 120-run opening partnership.
Jones was removed for 50 but Allen remained unbeaten at the close of play on 60.
