Upsets see Lexton and Harcourt bow out

Harcourt’s Jess Lord winds up for a long pass.

A weekend of stunning upsets saw both Harcourt and Lexton eliminated from the MCDFNL finals series in straight sets.

After dropping its qualifying final to minor premiers Trentham, the Lions came up against an Avoca side riding a high after sending Navarre packing last week.

A highly entertaining game unfolded as both sides entered a sounding out process in a high scoring opening term.

Quick ball movement meant that both sides created ample opportunities and at the end of the first term the deadlock was yet to be broken with the score sitting at 12 goals apiece.

The speed of the game didn’t slow up in the second as the frenetic pace continued.

The Lions continued to attack, scoring 13 goals, however Avoca was even more lethal, scoring 15 goals to take a two-goal lead into the main break.

Both sides continued to attack following halftime with Harcourt adding a further 13 goals to its total.

However, the Bulldogs continued to press, scoring 14 of their own, extending the lead to three at the final change of ends.

With a preliminary final spot on the line, Avoca pressed home, scoring another 14 goals to Harcourt’s 10, claiming a 48-55 win.

Meanwhile Carisbrook will play Trentham in the other preliminary final after a stunning final term fightback saw the Redbacks topple Lexton by a solitary goal.
