The Maryborough Football Netball Clubʼs 17 and under netball side has qualified for the 2017 grand final, which will be played in a fortnightʼs time, after defeating Golden Square in a preliminary final on Saturday.

Maryborough’s 17 and under netballers have given them- selves a chance at breaking a long-standing premiership drought after defying the odds and defeating Golden Square on Saturday in the Bendigo Foot- ball Netball League’s second preliminary final.

The Magpies stunned the minor premiers to claim a 21-goal win and gain automatic qualification for the 2017 grand final.

Maryborough will now have a week off and await the result of the preliminary final between Golden Square and Sandhurst that will decide who the Magpies meet in the grand final.

The young Magpie netballers were simply a class above Golden Square on Saturday, working away from the Bulldogs after a tight first quarter to grab a 64-43 victory.

Now into a grand final, the junior Magpies have a chance at breaking the Maryborough Football Netball Club’s long-standing netball premiership drought which stretches back to 1996, when the club’s B grade team took home the silverware.

The upcoming grand final appearance will be the first for a Maryborough side since the 17 and under netball team reached a decider in 2010.

The 2017 17 and under netball grand final is scheduled to begin at 9 am on Saturday, September 23.
