The old adage that hard work pays off rang true for Maryborough runner Elkie Belcher last month, as the local runner clocked up a personal best time to claim victory in the Sunshine Coast Marathon.
In just her fourth competitive marathon, Belcher blitzed the competition to claim victory in the stunning time of 2 hours 42 minutes and 34 seconds, far exceeding her expectations.
“Going in, my goal was to try to get under 2 hours 50 minutes, so to be able to achieve that in the way I did felt really good,” Belcher said.
While only her fourth marathon, Belcher’s journey to victory has been long and gruelling.
“I’ve put so much hard work in, lots of early mornings and long runs,” Belcher said.
Self trained, Belcher has shown remarkable discipline, rising at 4.30 am each morning for a 20 to 30 kilometre run before most people have even started their day.
