Sandhurst much too strong for Magpies

Sam McDowell was one of Maryborough’s few goalkickers on Saturday.

Maryborough has slumped to another heavy defeat, falling to Sandhurst 3.6 (24) to 23.14 (152) on the weekend.

The Magpies — in their first outing since the news that senior coach Shane Skontra would be parting ways with the club at season’s end — began the game in competitive fashion.

Maryborough matched Sandhurst around the contest and had plenty of opportunity to take a lead into quarter time, however inaccurate kicking meant that the Dragons headed the Magpies 0.4 (4) to 2.3 (15) at the first change.

However all that work was rapidly undone in the second as Maryborough came to a complete halt, scoring just one behind as the Dragons slammed on 8.3 to blow the margin out to 61 points by halftime.

Maryborough finally goaled in the third, with Sam McDowell, Harry Murphy and Matthew Coon all kicking majors, however, Sandhurst kicked seven of its own to extend its lead to 88 points going into the last.
