Navarre has moved a step ahead of Carisbrook at the head of the MCDFNL ladder after the Grasshoppers clawed their way to a 25-point win over the Redbacks on Saturday, clinch- ing the minor premiership.
The much-anticipated clash between the competition’s two top sides delivered on its hype, with both sides giving it their all in the 11.13 (79) to 6.18 (54) result in favour of Navarre.
The Redbacks were left to rue their inaccuracy, particularly in the third term, which saw the home side boot five behinds in contrast to two goals to Navarre.
The opening quarter was indicative of the arm wrestle which would unfold over the course of the afternoon, with just two points separating the two sides at the opening break.
That margin was again the difference at halftime, as the competition’s heavyweights refused to give each other an inch.
The third term proved the difference between the two sides, with the Grasshoppers pulling further ahead on the back of superior accuracy in front of goal, leading by 12-points at the final break.
With the deadlock finally broken, Navarre assumed outright ascendancy in the final term, booting three goals to the Redbacks’ one, to leave the ledger between the two sides in 2017 at one win apiece.
