Bulldogs finally break Navarre’s netball reign in Blair’s 400th

Avoca goal defence, Caitlin Drummond, takes the ball in the Bulldogsʼ strong win over Navarre, knocking the Grasshoppers out of the MCDFNL finals.

Navarre’s reign at the top of the MCDFNL has come to an end after the Grasshoppers were ejected from the MCDFNL’s finals series by Avoca.

In a re-match of last week’s match, in which the Grasshoppers got the early jump and ran away with the four points, the Bulldogs had focussed on getting off to a strong start. They did just that.

Celebrating club legend Stacey Blair’s 400th game for the club, the Bulldogs looked the better team right from the opening siren, controlling play to take a three-goal lead into quarter time.

Avoca continued to hold the ascendancy after the change of ends, controlling all thirds of the court to double its lead to six goals at the half.

Given Navarre’s reputation, many expected the Grasshoppers to respond strongly after the long break, however it was the Bulldogs, looking every bit a team on a mission, which came out strongest yet again, stretching the lead to an imposing nine goals going into the final term.

With the game in its keeping, Avoca ran out the match strongly, defeating Navarre 43-28 to advance to a semi final clash against Harcourt this week.
