Hawks hang on

Harcourtʼs Alex Birch kicks the Lions forward in his sideʼs narrow loss to Talbot.

Talbot has flown into the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League’s top eight after upstaging Harcourt by two points in a thrilling contest on Saturday.

The Hawks now sit a game clear inside the top eight with six rounds of the 2017 home and away season remaining after holding off a lacklustre but fast-finishing Lions outfit, 9.6 (60) to 8.10 (58).

Enduring three straight losses to the competition’s top three sides in Carisbrook, Navarre and Natte Bealiba, Talbot was forced to come from behind to finally claim the scalp of a top four side, after Harcourt led 3.1 (19) to 2.3 (15) at

The Hawks managed to turn the game on its head in the second quarter however, kicking four goals while holding the Lions to one major to lead by 15 points at halftime.

That lead grew to a seemingly match-winning 25 points at three quarter time as Talbot booted four straight goals in the third term while Harcourt could muster only one.

The Hawks’ scoring came to a screeching halt in the fourth however, as the home side came perilously close to surrendering victory, being held to a single point in the fourth term.
