Drug offences down, but crime in the Central Goldfields rises

Drug offences in the Central Goldfields Shire have almost halved over the past 12 months but the overall crime rate has risen by nearly 20 percent including a shocking 80 percent spike in sexual offences, recently released statistics reveal.

The statistics, which were released by the Crime Statistics Agency on Thursday, have revealed drug offences in the Central Goldfields Shire are down by 45 percent, including a 68.8 percent reduction in drug trafficking or dealing offences and a 58.3 percent drop in cultivation or manufacturing offences.

Weapons and explosive offences saw a reduction of nearly 60 percent over the past 12 months, while public nuisance offences are down by 37.5 percent.

Offences which saw the biggest increases in the Central Goldfields included crimes against the person, which went up by 34.9 percent, reported sexual offences and stalking (81.1 percent increase) and harassment and threatening behaviour offences (116.7 percent increase).
