Richelle Cranston will be part of history this weekend as she runs out for the Demons in the inaugural round of the AFL Women’s league.

Former Maryborough local Richelle Cranston is set to make history this weekend when she runs out with the Melbourne Demons as part of the opening round of the inaugural AFL Women’s season.

Selected by the Demons at pick 24 in the first-ever womens’ draft in October, Cranston says she’s honoured to be pulling on the Dees’ famous red and blue colours in the side’s opening round clash with Brisbane at Casey Fields.

“It’s really only just hit me that we are making history and this is a first” she said.

“I feel privileged to be a part of it.”

Recruited from VWFL team, the North Geelong Magpies, Cranston has spent the past few months undergoing an exhaustive pre- season program alongside her teammates, and says she’s entering Sunday’s clash with the Lions in prime condition.

“This pre-season has been the hardest but most rewarding thing I’ve ever experienced,” she said.
