Milder weather across the Central Goldfields last weekend allowed fire crews to conduct planned burns.

The planned burns took place in Maryborough and Avoca on Sunday with Forest Fire Management Victoria Murray Goldfields district manager Paul Bates saying it’s the start of a series of planned burns.

“Depending on the weather, we hope to begin our spring planned burning program with burns near Avoca, Maryborough, Wedderburn, Heathcote, Bendigo and Rushworth over the next few weeks,” he said.

“The aim of conducting the burns is to reduce the overall fuel hazard within the burn area and in turn, provide added protection from bushfire to neighbouring commu- nities.”

On Sunday, a four-hectare burn on Boundary Road, 700 metres north east of Avoca and a 20-hectare burn in the Maryborough township at Jeffs Street were conducted.
