Poor opening costs Pies

A poor first quarter has denied Maryborough its first win of the 2014 Bendigo Football Netball League season against premiership hopefuls Gisborne.

In an otherwise positive performance in their return to Princes Park, the Magpies outscored Gisborne in three of the four quarters to go down by only 22 points, 12.14 (86) to 16.12 (108).

Coming into the match on the back of a 121 point drubbing of Castlemaine in round one, Gisborne extended its hot form into the first quarter against Maryborough, tearing away to a 42 point lead at quarter time after holding the Magpies goalless in the opening term.
