Twenty-five years after a chance encounter with a tiny joey, hardworking and dedicated wildlife volunteers Brenda and Garry Cheers have been honoured with a nomination for Australian of the Year.
Brenda received an individual nomination and the couple were also nominated jointly.
Even though they were not named finalists, both are very deserving nominees.
“It came as a complete surprise and is very humbling,” Brenda said.
“I still haven’t found anyone to put their hand up and say they are the guilty party.”
Brenda and Garry are founding members of the wildlife group WRIN (Wildlife Rescue and Information Network).
The network is now in its 13th year and the couple have been there since before its formation.
It is also nearly 25 years since the Maryborough Wildlife Shelter was opened on their Dunolly Road property.
It all started when Garry was driving a truck at night, as at the time he was delivering bread.
