The Maryborough Highland Society team of Meryl James, Norma Brumby and Jan Turner (skip) will represent Group One after winning at Group level recently.
The triples was played on the Mount Xavier green in very warm conditions and the Maryborough District Ladies Bowling Association representatives drew the bye in the first round.
The Avenue team representing the Ballarat association played the Lake Bolac side of the Grampians association.
With the temperature getting above 30¡ Celsius, the ladies were doing it tough but there was some very good bowling.
The Lake Bolac ladies started well and got out to a very handy 12-4 lead in the 18 end match but Avenue fought back well to level the contest at 12-all after 13 ends.
Two threes on the next two ends gave Avenue what proved to be an insurmountable lead and the side finally won 19-16 to advance to the final to play the MDLBA ladies.
The final was extremely tight throughout with some class draw bowling by both teams.
The score was tied at four-all and then six-all before the Highland bowlers slipped away to 11-6 after winning four ends straight.
However, Avenue came back strongly with six shots over the next four ends and the teams were again tied at 12 apiece after 16 of the 18 ends had been played.
Turner’s Highland ladies gained a shot on the penultimate end but Avenue answered the challenge with a single on the 18th end and again the teams were tied.
An extra end had to be played and when it came to the skippers, Avenue was holding the shot.
With her first bowl, Turner drew the absolute shot to put plenty of pressure on her opposing skipper.
She missed with a drive and then Turner fell a little short and so the Highland team was holding shot with one bowl to come.
The Avenue skipper failed to alter the head with her last bowl and the Highland ladies had won the Group final 14-13.
All the Group winners (16) will play off at the Bendigo Bowling Club on January 21 and 22, 2010.
