Senior soccer team competing in the Ballarat reserves competition
By Graeme Grant • Jul 30th, 2010 • Category: SoccerThis season, the Maryborough City Soccer Club has been running a senior team in the Ballarat and District Soccer Association reserves grade.
There were a number of players who wanted to play Ballarat and District Soccer Association at under 17 level but not enough to fill a full squad; consequently, the committee decided to enter a reserves team, hoping that enough adults would join with the junior players to put a competitive side on the park each Sunday.
Unfortunately, there were not enough adults with a soccer background to complement the under 17 players and while a team has been fielded each week, many players were taking to the game for the first time.
Consequently the team has suffered some heavy defeats, particularly in the early games of the season and more than once suffered defeat by losing to double figures in score.
However, the committee was heartened by the attitude of the players. Despite the defeats and offers to drop to a junior grade, the team committed to continue at any cost and every week 11 players ran out to take on the opposition.
