There was no room to move on the platform of the Maryborough Railway Station on Saturday as the reintroduction of passenger rail services to Maryborough was celebrated.

People of all ages turned out in droves to see the first passenger train pull into the station since the service was stopped in 1993.

Premier John Brumby was on a special train for the occasion that departed Creswick station, where hundreds of people had gathered, for the Maryborough station.

The train was greeted by an even bigger crowd at the Maryborough station, who clapped as it arrived.

Saturday’s celebrations set the scene for Sunday’s departure of the first train as part of the service, which despite a foggy winter morning, carried a large number of passengers.

“It is fantastic to see so many people here from Maryborough, here from along the line, to celebrate this great day for Maryborough,” Premier Brumby said on Saturday.

“Everywhere we went along the way, the rail crossings along the way, there were cars pulled up, there were people waving,” he said.
