The Maryborough Highland Society team of Meryl James, Norma Brumby and Jan Turner (skip) will represent Group One after winning at Group level recently.
After weather robbed them of the chance to celebrate in style as winners of last weekend’s RACV Energy Breakthrough, Highview College and Maryborough Education Centre decided to take matters into their own hands.
Highview’s Evie and Onyx teams, which took out the HPV Class C and HPV Class B2 titles respectively, and MEC’s Supreme Team which claimed first place honours in the all-female category, joined together to ride a victory lap and pass the chequered flag.
Highview’s Terry Payne said it was a chance for all three teams to get the finish they deserved, as opposed to the weekend’s finish which saw the 24 hour event cut short after downpours caused organisers to cancel the race after fears for competitors’ safety.
Denise Chipper will be remembered by many in the community as she started work at Maryborough District Health Service in 1980 and during her time at MDHS made a significant contribution to the advancement of infection control throughout health services in Victoria.
Ms Chipper has recently been recognised by the Victorian Infection Control Professionals Association as an Honour Roll nominee to acknowledge her role in the development of infection control programs throughout rural Victoria.
There were upsets galore in the Midlands Bowls Association pennant competition on Saturday with Highland Tartan inflicting Avoca Red’s third straight defeat, top side Dunolly Blue going down to Golf Blue and bottom team Dunolly Gold playing a tie with Talbot Gold.
In the Maryborough Highland Society Basketball Association open men’s competition last week, Saints Black drew with Bullets Black.
Bullets Black’s Will Short and Matt Cullinan played hard defence. Great three pointer shots by Will Short and Zach Cullinan helped keep Bullets in the match.
Driving rain, winds and dust storms failed to dampen spirits at the weekend’s RACV Energy Breakthrough, despite the weather forcing organisers to cut the 24-hour endurance race short.
Competitors battled against heavy rains and gale-force winds for six hours during the event’s night stage before it was deemed too dangerous for the race to continue, cut short by more than three hours.
It is only the second time in the event’s 19 year history that the race has been shut down.
The wild weather began on Friday, when strong winds whipped dust across the town, causing visibility issues, coupled with scorching heat.
Saturday brought with it a change in the weather, as rain bucketed down, drenching competitors and spectators alike.
All three matches in A grade of the Maryborough and District Tennis Association on Saturday were one-sided. In somewhat of a surprise result, Gully White smashed the highly rated Majorca team 7-67 to 2-40. The men of Gully White won two of the three contests as did the women and with the mixed sets to be played, the home team held a big 13 game advantage.
